RestaurantsThe grandeur of the Maya culture goes beyond the great structures, the prophecies and the precise calculation of cosmic events; it shines in the quality and the exquisiteness of their cuisine too. Yucatecan dishes are a fortunate result of the fusion of ingredients from many different parts of the world. Cuba, China, some European countries and even the Middle East, have significantly influenced the Yucatan, and as a result delicious dishes famous around the world have been created.
Some ingredients used by the ancient Mayas such as pheasant and venison have been substituted for turkey and pork respectively; some others, like corn, have been used for centuries and remain as basic elements of the Yucatecan cuisine. Some of the very famous dishes of region: papadzules, panuchos, sopa de lima, chilmole, pavo en relleno negro, poc-chuc, queso relleno, pescado tikinxic, wich are all easy found in the many local restaurants.

Desserts are the perfect way to wrap up the culinary experience. Yucatecan cuisine has a variety of sweets and desserts worth trying, such as "torta de cielo" (almond cake with a hint of cognac), "caballeros pobres" (bread with honey and raisins), "margaritas de almendra" (almond lilies), and papaya sweets.
